These days – whether it's shampoo or food – it's becoming harder to tell what exactly "natural" means. It doesn't mean the same as organic and there's no definite definition from any particular agency anywhere. Because "natural" has good and bad connotations (oil is natural but it doesn't mean it's good for you), Aveda uses the term "naturally derived". But what does that mean exactly?
Basically, it means that ingredients in Aveda's products are derived from a plant, non-petroleum mineral or another natural source (such as water) and that more than 50% of the molecular weight comes from those natural sources. This sets a relatively high standard for what natural means at Aveda and its salons.
